leeds superbus

Various techniques have been used for a long time to give buses right of way - bus lanes are the most obvious. The new Leeds superbuses go a step further.

Superbus is a "guided bus" which runs in a special concrete track, and is steered by guide wheels on the sides of the bus. The clever part is that the special track only need be provided where there is a likelyhood of traffic building up, since the bus can also run as normal on the road.

When the bus enters the guide track, a signal is sent to nearby traffic lights which let the bus go when it arrives at a junction. This means that the bus avoids the delays associated with busy junctions. This can be seen in the photo on the next page.
