smart tickets

Many cities have replaced the standard paper bus ticket with a "smart" ticket with a magnetic strip.

EMT's "Bonobus" 10-ride ticket from Valencia, Spain

In much of Europe, you can buy a smart ticket at every corner shop or newsagent. The ticket gives you ten rides. When you get on the bus, you put the ticket in a machine which deletes one ride from the magnetic strip. This saves time when lots of people get on the bus and means buses don't need to carry change.

The ticket machine can also keep track of how many people have used the bus, at what time, and which other routes they typically use. This information is very useful to help bus companies develop better services.
