The global positioning system (GPS) works by using a network of 24 satellites in three perpendicular orbits around the Earth.
The satellites are arranged so that at least three are always visible from anywhere on the planet.
By measuring the distances to three satellites of known position, a GPS receiver can work out exactly where it is. This is known as "trilateration".
