what are AVLS?

Satellite navigation technology is starting to be used on bus networks (automatic vehicle locator systems or AVLS) so that the exact position of each individual bus is known.

Each bus is fitted with a satellite navigation device to locate it accurately. It then sends the location to a central computer via the cellular phone network.

demonstration only - not real data

This information could be provided on a web page so that you can see exactly where your bus has got to - imagine a bus map with animated buses driving round it!

It can also be used to provide computerised telephone information services, so you can check when the next bus will arrive from your mobile phone.
