Closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras can be watched by computers. These can read the number plate of your car, or recognise your face from a photo.

But surveillance does not only mean taking pictures of people. Email, fax and telephone conversations can all be monitored electronically. The government is involved with a highly secret project called "Echelon" which does this.

Companies also monitor us, especially if we are employees. If you work at a computer, your boss can monitor keyboard activity to see how active you are.
Call centre workers particularly are subject to a high degree of surveillance.
