is anything moving?

Motion detection is one of the basic problems for computers trying to monitor CCTV images. If the computer has a recorded image of the background, then it can spot parts of the image which differ from the background. These areas are likely to be people or vehicles travelling through the image.

Simply spotting motion is rarely enough. A good system must also be able to work out what is going on. This can be very tricky if people walk behind other people, obscuring them from view. The video clips (right) show a University of Leeds system which can track people moving across a scene.
