what is

Echelon is one of the code names for a highly sophisticated communication monitoring system run by the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Denmark.

The system uses satellite monitoring stations like the one at Menwith Hill near Harrogate to intercept global communications. Since the system is run by a group of countries, it has monitoring stations across the globe, and can intercept virtually any electronic communication - telephone, fax, email, whatever.

These communications can then be scanned by computer programs looking for keywords. The use of powerful computers allows our goverment to monitor a huge volume of messages.

Some people are very concerned about the activities of Echelon, saying that it is not properly legally controlled.
