closed circuit television

Closed circuit television (CCTV) is now a familar part of life. Britain is one of the most-watched countries in the world.

One of the big problems with CCTV is that someone must monitor the images generated. This is boring, tiring work. However, computer systems can try to spot moving objects and alert us.

More sophisticated automatic monitoring is also possible. One example is the Mandrake face recognition software. It tries to spot known criminals by comparing CCTV images with a database.

Computers can also monitor us as we travel. The London congestion charge scheme uses 700 cameras to read and record vehicle number plates.
