British Columbia Cancer Research Center in Canada has a program of research into applying similar techniques to skin cancers.

Given an digitised image, the computer can spot suspected melanomas and outline them for a doctor's attention.

It uses image-enhancement techniques like contrast boosting to make important features more visible. The software in use today has an accuracy of between 85 and 95 percent.
