Computers can be used to automatically sort data from tests. Any suspicious looking results will be passed to a human doctor for analysis. This means doctors do not waste time looking at many hundreds of results for healthy people.
One area where this is done is breast cancer screening. Using digitised images is much cheaper. Digital X-rays can be easily copied and sent to other hospitals (via email, for example) and need less space to store. An average U.S. hospital spends $4,000,000 developing traditional X-rays every year!
