Computed Tomography (CT) is a development of the X-ray. Whereas an X-ray is a simple picture through the body, CT can show a 3D image on a computer screen.
A CT scanner typically looks like a large vertical ring. The patient lies on table which passes through the centre of the ring. A X-ray source and detector are mounted on the ring. They rotate around the body and take multiple X-rays of the body from many angles. The computer can then work out what the inside of the body looks like.
