resolution

The "resolution" of a screen is the number of dots it can show. More dots makes a finer detailed picture.

Digital television offers various formats to the broadcaster, allowing them the choose what resolution they use. Lower resolution uses less space (called "bandwidth") on the transmitters, so allows them to broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency. These are known as sub-channels.
