Music recorded on CD is digital. This means that the music has been turned into numbers, and then the numbers are stored on the disc. This process is called digitisation.
Once the music is digitised, it can be recorded on a CD or a minidisc, or it can be converted into any of the variety of computer sound file formats (MP3, wav, aiff, au). These files can then be sent by email, for example. Soon you will be able to send music files to your phone to use as a ringtone.
Part of the power of digital media is this flexibility.
