frames per second

Digital television can broadcast twice as many frames per second (fps) as standard television. This means the differences between frames are smaller and action on the screen appears smoother.

The example on the right shows a movie by Victorian photographer Eadweard Muybridge. The top movie is running at 16 frames per second, the lower one at only 8 frames per second. You can see that the top movie is visibly smoother - not bad for film shot over 100 years ago! Digital television can provide up to 60 frames per second for super-smooth motion.
